This publication is simply a must-have manual for anyone constructing or maintaining a tennis court.
Choosing a surface
As surface selection is such a crucial step, it's good to see this book covers it in depth. It brings up many factors to consider, including geographic location, intended use, player preferences, how often they will be playing, cost, and even how careful the players will be with the court..... the list goes on and on.
An excellent chart is included that shows the strengths and weakness of all the different surfaces. Down the left hand column, are 14 surfaces types. These include clay, grass, reinforced concrete, textile, synthetic turf, etc. There are 10 headings along the top including:- price per court, maintenance [frequency], cost of maintenance, ave. time before major resurfacing, resurfacing cost, drying time after rain, surface indoors or outdoors, etc.
Care and Maintenance
An entire 20 page long chapter has tons of useful tips for every type of court under the sun. I particularly liked the maintenance schedule, winterizing guidelines, and the crack prevention tip of using control joints. Even lighting, nets, net posts, and windscreens are covered in a good detail.
Planning Permission
A good chunk of the book is about planning. Yet planning permission has merely one paragraph.
As far as I'm concerned, it's a crucial first step to the building any tennis court, yet it merely skims over several potentially important factors, such as zoning, fence location and height, erosion control and drainage. More details here would have been appreciated.
Conclusions
Overall, this reference manual has lots of useful information. It's written in an informative, rational style and covers everything you will need to know to physically build your project.
Sure, a tennis court can be built without reading this book. However, you may in for some unpleasant surprises down the road. A poorly constructed tennis court will cost more in the long run and may be less pleasurable to use.
If you have the goal of constructing not just a good tennis court but a great one, I would recommend that you read this book from cover to cover. The authors obviously have many years of experience and I would say that each and every page contains at least one very useful tip. |
