Building a Tennis Court - Conclusion

David's Best Tips:

  • Planning permission may not be required for building a grass court in your back yard.
  • Allthough the stipulated area for a tennis court is 120 feet by 60 feet, 110 by 55 is adequate for most people and can shave thousands off the cost.
  • Putting fencing only around the backs of the court saves money and is visually less intrusive.
  • Cutting the corners off at 45 degrees doesn't effect play but instead is visually more pleasing and it also trickles the balls to the centre of the court behind the baseline.

It was my dream, but you know when you’ve got a beautiful dream you’ll find that people want to change that if they can.

Right.

They don’t like you to have your beautiful dream come true. Well, that’s possibly shows that I’m a little bit embittered, perhaps they do and you should look at it that way and perhaps they will agree anyway.

So you think that... if you want to have a tennis court built you should go to your local council, is that your first port of call or are there other things that you need to do? I guess you have to measure out much space you need for example? How much space do you need for a tennis court?

You’d go first of all to your local council and then you would go to the planning department of the area you see. And you might learn a lot by just going and talking to them cause you... I remember that I knew there was a house up for sale and it had a small holding on it and it was up for sale. And I went to the planning department and asked them if I went and bought that house could I change the part that was a small holding into a couple of tennis courts and they said they’d support me in that one. I didn’t actually buy it because I didn’t like the house and I didn’t like the position of the thing... the whole thing. But I could of build courts and they said they would support me, so they’d speak for me you see and that would have been terrific, because they wanted that bit of land to be used properly. The reason that it was it was being sold was because the people couldn’t make a go of it you see and in a sense they were doing rather a nice thing.

So you know it’s not all doom and gloom you ask them and if you ask them properly and if it’s possible you can still get planning permission even if they’re slightly against it. It doesn’t mean that they will stop it they just advise against it really. They’re biased but they’re meant to be unbiased.
