Planning permission may not be required for building a grass court in your back yard.
Allthough the stipulated area for a tennis court is 120 feet by 60 feet, 110 by 55 is adequate for most people and can shave thousands off the cost.
Putting fencing only around the backs of the court saves money and is visually less intrusive.
Cutting the corners off at 45 degrees doesn't effect play but instead is visually more pleasing and it also trickles the balls to the centre of the court behind the baseline.

And what surface exactly... what make was of surface was it? Who laid your court?
Oh, a very famous company laid my court by the name of "En-Tout-Cas"... they came into being because the shale courts that were put up to represent the clay courts of the continent and became the official surface British hard court championships that were played at Bournemouth. En-tout-cas laid these shale courts. It was a terrific company with a lot of understanding. And Dennis, their chief court maker, became a good friend of mine actually. And he came along and laid my court.
Right.
And Dennis he... any tradesman who loves his job becomes an artist in the end. And he was a court layer and a half. Dennis knew everything there was to know about tennis courts. He had never truthfully played but he knew his job. You know... how can I put it?... a lovely, lovely man and he laid me a beautiful court. Absolutely lovely. In fact Dennis oversaw it, his son actually laid it, but under strict instructions.
